Managing a Forum or a Blog
Managing a Forum or a Blog
One of the most fun hobbies for any webmaster is running and managing a forum and a blog, both of which are exciting online communities. However, with the revenue and fun, these types of social websites need to be managed in a proper manner and have to be checked frequently for either spam, hacking, or other various issues that may arise as your website becomes more and more popular of frequented by repeat visitors. These issues can arise no matter how many moderators or administrators you have or the level of security you have behind your hosting.
As an owner of an online community, you must be able to compete with other forums and blogs. One of the easiest methods is to keep fresh content on your website. Depending on your forums topic, you must update it with either forum/blog news or general worldly news on the category in need of updating. New pictures that aren?t copyrighted can be a nice visual update as this is generally done by many of the constantly moderated public forums and phpnuke type websites. Also, you can ask members to contribute news through a simple uploaded script which gives your members or readers an interest in the administration of your community and saves you, the webmaster, a ton of time dealing with the uploading of new and fresh content.
Another important aspect of maintaining a great online forum or blog is to offer something back to the loyal readers and members of your website. This can be done by allowing them to add comments, making special forums for elite members, or most importantly offering weekly or monthly contests through your website. Any good webmaster of a blog or forum will tell you that a huge aspect of managing their websites is to reward members for their participation since that is the main factor in determining the success of your website. These contests or rewards can be anything from a cash prize to a simple link on one of your website?s pages allowing traffic to go to their website. You can even give out t-shirts with the web address of your website.
On top of those management properties, one must be fully aware of their competition. Since blogs and forums are some of the most oversaturated markets for websites and generally anyone can start one, there are tons and tons of new social websites being built every second. Your competition is growing and with just about any category of a website, they are trying to take your members and in the case of blogs, those who comment on your blog. Make sure you have researched your competition and have their websites bookmarked in your browser?s favorites list.
Also, make sure you have a good CMS, a content management system, such as wordpress to manage your blog. For forums, VBulletin is the best forum software which does incorporate well with search engine optimization just as good as using wordpress for your blog.
