Many people beleive that Google is the only thing that matters on the internet. They design their sites with only Google in mind and obtaining that top position for a highly searched keyword/phrase. While these nut jobs are running around spending countless hours doing this, they’re over looking a very important part of any community or website for that matter. User Experience.

Google is NOT the internet, it isn’t your websites success or failure it isn’t even a measure of your success or failure. Google is a tool, one that you should use, but use in moderation and wisely. Do not make your site for Google, make your site for Users! And I’ll even tell you why!

Your title tag is one of the most important aspects of Search Engine Optimisation. It tells a Search Engine exactly what the page contains, so you obviously want to target that to your most important search keywords. Here are three things you can do to maximise your title tag with vBulletin.

1. Remove “powered by vBulletin” from your titles

This one’s an oldie but a goodie, who wants to give vBulletin some of your precious title tag juice? Not me! Don’t worry, this is perfectly in line with the vBulletin TOS.

  1. Open up your forum’s control panel.
  2. Go to Language & Phrases > Search in Phrases
  3. In the search box, enter x_powered_by_vbulletin, and make sure “Search in…” is set to Phrase Text and Phrase Variable Name.
  4. Edit the phrase, and change it from {1} - Powered by vBulletin to just simply {1}
  5. Save the phrase!

2. Change your FORUMHOME title tag.

On my blogging forum, I managed to get to #11 on Google by simply editing the <title> tag in my FORUMHOME to better represent the search terms I wanted to target for.

  1. Open the Style Manager in your Control Panel.
  2. Expand the Style you want to work with, and then expand the “Forum Home Templates”, finally choosing to edit the FORUMHOME template.
  3. Find the <title> tag and edit the text inside of it to better reflect the tags you want to target for.

I notice these days that there is a site a minute popping up, but people don’t exactly understand how one gets and maintains members. They think they can just throw a site up and BAM you have magic. A website takes a lot of hard work and time. But after many years of learning the hard way, I have come up with what seems to be a fool proof plan.

Step 1 The Name

One mistake people seem to make a lot is having a website name that is not relevant at all to their site. This hurts you so much in the web world. You have a site names applesandoranges.com, but you’re selling hats. Now these people come to your site and see there are no apples or oranges. Well needless to say they aren’t going to come back. That’s equivalent to lying to ones face in the web world. So always think very hard about your name and make sure it’s relevant to your content. If you can pick a word for your name that appears multiple times in your content this will help you tremendously later on down the road.

Step 2 Picking a host

Now you are asking why does this even matter. Well, a lot of times people go for cheap hosts who offer unlimited this and that. In most cases they are probably someone who oversells their hosting. This is not always horrible thing, but it could end up costing your site up-time. And every minute your site is down, that’s a minute you could have been making more members. So take your time and investigate a host. The best way is to hop on Google and look for reviews. See what people think, and also check their up-time. They have many sites online that monitor up-time of hosting companies.
